This article is an update on the slower traffic moving to the right issue. It finally seems we are getting some action from legislators in some states to make it illegal to drive slowly in the fast lane.

Driving slowly in the fast lane is discourteous and soon to be illegal.

A new proposed law in Georgia would make it illegal to drive slower than the speed limit in the fast lane when someone is behind you. The bill appears to be well written with a few excerpts that we could all learn from:

  • No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation.
  • On roads, streets, or highways with two or more lanes allowing for movement in the same direction, no person shall continue to operate a motor vehicle in the most left-hand lane at less than the maximum lawful speed limit once such person knows or should reasonably know that he or she is being overtaken in such lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed, except when such motor vehicle is preparing for a left turn.
  • Upon a controlled-access highway, no person shall operate a vehicle in the left lane, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle.

Here are a few quick tips on not being a left lane camper and avoiding that ticket:

  • Be courteous, which includes not impeding traffic unnecessarily.
  • Read our refresher tip on using your mirrors, which includes the critical item of properly adjusting your mirrors in the first place.
  • Realize that it will be safer and less stressful for everyone on the road by being courteous and not impeding traffic.

Hopefully the new law in Georgia becomes a national trend and soon all states will make it illegal to impede traffic on our highways. My guess is the number of road rage cases will decrease dramatically and our roads will be safer overall.
