Washington Teen Drivers Ed Permit

Steps to Getting a Driver's permit

  • Create a free account on igottadrive.com for your supplemental online driver's ed course. Our course is designed using modern instructional techniques and is based on the most up to date research. Use this course as a study guide along with your Washington driver guide to prepare for your instruction permit.
  • Successfully complete your online driver's ed course. The time you spend in our course will not only strengthen your driving knowledge, but also put you on the road to becoming a safe driver. This course does not replace your 30 hours of classroom education required by the state of Washington.
  • Apply for your instruction permit at your local Washington DOL office. Take your Birth Certificate, Driving School permit waiver (if applicable), required additional documents, and form of payment with you to the DOL office. The fee is paid directly to the DOL as a processing fee. You will need to pass a vision test for you application as well.
  • Pass the DOL driver's knowledge test. If you do not have a permit waiver from your driving school you will need to take a driver's knowledge test at your local testing location. Fear not, the instruction you received from igottadrive.com combined with the Washington driver guide will have prepared you to pass the driver's knowledge test the first time.
  • Smile for the camera. The last step to getting your instruction permit is having your picture taken at the DOL office. Be sure to smile and look good for your newly minted instruction permit.
  • Congratulations! With your instruction permit in hand, you can now proceed with your behind the wheel training at your driving school.  Practice makes perfect and with your new permit you can legally drive in the presence of your parent, guardian, or an adult over 21 years of age.

The next step after your instruction permit is to get in-car training and the necessary experience for taking the road test at the DOL. We recommend you take Washington Drivers Ed from igottadrive.com to be truly prepared. The most important detail is to get practice, practice, and more practice behind the wheel. It has been demonstrated novice drivers with more supervised practice will become safer drivers, so don't skimp on the practice!
